Work in action
A recently completed large-scale reservoir refurbishment project at a strategically important water treatment facility is an excellent illustration of Stonbury’ s work in action. This project extended the reservoir’ s lifespan by over ten years whilst mitigating the need for a costly and carbon-intensive new build alternative. As the reservoir was experiencing ingress, the goal was to achieve a fully watertight structure that could continue to meet demand and supply safe drinking water to surrounding areas. However, operating at 400 metres above sea level presented major challenges due to extreme weather and temperature variations. The project involved a wide variety of tasks. To deal with the low temperatures, Stonbury utilised a natural cement capable of setting at temperatures as low as 0 ° Celsius and approved for potable water use.
Additionally, the team removed the existing soil overburden and excavated the tank perimeter to access the roof wall-head joint to re-waterproof the reservoir. New perimeter drainage was installed, and the roof slab was prepared with high-pressure water-jetting followed by a cementitious screed. Overbanding was applied to the wall-head joint and all external roof joints, with a new liquid membrane added to the roof and a roughcast system applied to the walls of the valve houses. Internal works included leak-sealing, overbanding of all joints
showing signs of ingress, and concrete repairs to walls, columns, and beams. Externally, once works to the tank roof were completed, the Stonbury team reinstated a new 20-millimetre washed and rounded gravel overburden and added perimeter kerbing. Throughout the
project, Stonbury provided regular updates via its online client portal, and the client was pleased to see that the project remained on schedule despite the challenging conditions.
With sustainability at the heart of its operations and a proven track record in delivering transformative water asset management solutions, Stonbury stands out as an industry trailblazer. ■
